2nd Cor 5:21
I want us to look at another major Bible theme, Substitution death of Christ. To understand it, we need to look at the Old Testament sacrificial system. Once a year you would come to the temple or tabernacle with 2 sheep. Picture it; the metallic smell of spilled blood, the stench of burnt flesh. The sinner would place his hand on the head of one of the sheep and say, "My sin be on this lamb." With that, the lamb was sacrificed. Its neck cut, blood sprinkled on and near the alter and the ark, the offering was burned. (See Exod. 29:15-20) I want us to see the symbolism here; the lamb, a type of Christ, the blood, his shed on the cross. The Sinless Lamb of God took every person ever born or ever would be born on himself. This fulfills the prophesy spoken by Abraham in Gen. 22:8. This was his substitution death for you and me. He freely took what was due us. Without the shedding of blood there can be no forgiveness of sins. (also see Heb. 10:19) He gave his life and his blood to reconcile us to God the Father. Allowing us once again to have communion with him. When he said, "It is finished", the substitution was complete. Yet, this by itself is not enough to grant us Salvation. We must realize our sinfulness and need. It is what required the blood of Gods Holy Lamb and its application to our Hearts. The words, "God be merciful to me a sinner", are no magical incantation, but the hearts cry for Christ's work on the cross. His Gift. His Life, where ours was due. No greater love is there than this: for a Man to lay his life down for his friends. (John 15:13) Let us pray:
My Father and my God, How great is your foresight! From the first sin, the plan of Salvation was in effect. You saw my need, you saw everyones, ever descendant of Adams need for a once and forever sacrifice. We thank you for your son Jesus. Who freely gave his life for ours. What an amazing love you have for your children. Help us to live in a way that brings Honor and Glory to you. In Jesus' name, Amen.
