1st John 1:1-4
A few years ago, my children and I were hiking along a section of the Appalachian Trail is Southern Lancaster County. Near the top of the ridge we came across a natural cave. Wind would whistle and blow out, so I knew it was open on both ends. The deeper we went the colder and darker it became. We were not really prepared for it. We got about half way through and had lost all light. Many other hikers were behind us and we couldn't turn around because it was far to narrow so we pushed on through. For a stretch we were groping around, banging our heads and scraping our knees. Not fun at all.
Today's reading is all about light and darkness. Most of us spend the majority of our time groping around in the darkness. For some, they rely on intellectual enlightenment. Science is the pursuit of understanding what occurred when God said, "Let there be................" Only Christ is the source of true light, true understanding. Everything else is knowledge. We see this world fumbling around is the dark, trying to make sense of the Chaos. We as Christians have and are the light of Christ. When we lift up Jesus, HE will draw all men to himself, (John 12:32) as a moth seeks the flame. The world has the sickness, we have the cure. They need, we have. Jesus is the light of the world (V1:7). How can we hide it? How can we keep it to ourselves? The light and Love of Christ is the only thing I know of that can be spread as far, as deep, as wide and thick as we want and never be too thin. To share his light, is an honor and a privilege. Only we can share. Let us pray:
Lord, We come to you today as bearers of your light. You have entrusted mankind the duty of sharing it with a lost and dieing world. Everyday we see those who have not been touched with the light. All we need to do is open a newspaper and look. We treat your saving grace like it is our sole position. Lord, help us to give it away. Share it with the world. We need you to provide us with the opportunity to do so. Help your servants Give light to the world, so they can find their way to you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
